Will AI Replace my Hebrew Teacher?

In the brief weeks following the grand entrance of "Claude Code" into our lives, and before the war, many conversations centered around the quantum leap in Artificial Intelligence capabilities. It seems everyone is unsettled yet mesmerized, oscillating between curiosity and a certain recoil from the transformation humanity is about to undergo very soon. A technological breakthrough of this magnitude has the potential to reshape the world. Not surprisingly, one of the issues is the impact of AI on the future of the labor market. AI is so sophisticated that it can not only streamline processes but actually replace entire sectors. It is already capable, and will likely only improve, of leading creative thinking processes. Specifically, today’s language models are highly advanced; within seconds, they can diagnose a student's level, build detailed curriculum, read essays, or listen to Hebrew monologues and correct errors, "conduct a conversation" in writing or even speech. The machine knows the rules of grammar and every word in the dictionary. So, why am I not worried?
This advertisement from eight years ago, an eternity in internet terms, for the "Allegro" language school beautifully demonstrates the reason. I suggest taking three minutes to watch it (and perhaps keep some tissues handy):
After years in the field of Hebrew instruction, I can say with certainty: language is connection. We learn it for the sake of connection, and through real relationship. Over the years, the students I’ve met haven't just sought to understand, read, write, or speak Hebrew in the technical sense. Someone who chooses to dedicate one, two, three, or sometimes many more hours a week to work on their Hebrew doesn't do it for no reason. The motivation is deep; whether it’s connection to Israel, family, or local professionals, connection to history, heritage, or Jewish identity. Language learning is anchored in relationships, in meeting a kind set of eyes, asking "How are you?", and receiving a personal, human response. This component of learning is irreplaceable.
So, while it’s true that AI can answer our questions, detect errors, and build lesson plans (sometimes even better than we can), it is an excellent tool that we should work with, not against. But will it replace flesh-and-blood teachers? In my opinion, the answer is no. As long as language is tied to the human soul, no machine will ever be able to take its place.

בשבועות הקצרים שלפני המלחמה ואחרי פריצת "קלוד קוד" לחיינו, הרבה שיחות סלון סבבו סביב הקפיצה ביכולות של הבינה המלאכותית. נדמה שכולם מעורערים, ממוגנטים, נעים בין סקרנות לרתיעה מהשינוי שהאנושות עומדת לעבור בקרוב מאוד. פריצת דרך טכנולוגית כזאת עשויה לשנות סדרי עולם. לא מפתיע שאחד הנושאים הבוערים בסוגייה הוא השפעת הבינה על עתיד שוק העבודה. הבינה המלאכותית כל כך משוכללת שהיא יכולה לא רק לקצר תהליכים, אלא ממש להחליף סקטורים שלמים. היא כבר מסוגלת, וככל הנראה תלך ותשתפר בהובלת תהליכי חשיבה יצירתיים. ספציפית מודלי השפה של היום מתקדמים ביותר והם יכולים תוך שניות לאבחן רמה, לבנות תכניות לימודים מפורטות, לקרוא חיבורים או להאזין למונולוגים בעברית ולתקן שגיאות, "לנהל שיחה" בכתב או אפילו בעל-פה. המכונה מכירה את חוקי הדקדוק ואת כל המילים במילון. אז למה אני לא מודאגת?
הפרסומת הזאת מלפני 8 שנים, נצח במונחי אינטרנט, לבית ספר ללימוד שפות "אלגרו" מדגימה יפה את הסיבה. אני מציעה להקדיש שלוש דקות כדי לצפות בה (ולהכין את הממחטות).
אחרי שנים בתחום הוראת העברית אני יודעת לומר בבירור: שפה היא קשר. לומדים אותה עבור קשר, ובתוך קשר.
לאורך השנים התלמידות והתלמידים שפגשתי לא חיפשו רק להבין, לקרוא, לכתוב לדבר בעברית במובן הטכני של העניין. מי שבוחרת להקדיש שעה, שעתיים, שלוש, ולפעמים הרבה יותר מזה בשבוע כדי לעבוד על העברית שלה לא עושה זאת סתם. המניע הוא עמוק - בין אם מדובר בקשר לישראל, משפחה או תעסוקה כאן, בין אם קשר להיסטוריה, למורשת או לזהות היהודית.
למידת שפה מעוגנת בקשר, ביחסים. בלפגוש עיניים טובות ולשאול מה נשמע, ולקבל תשובה אישית, אנושית. הרכיב הזה בלימודים הוא חסר תחליף.
אז נכון, בינה מלאכותית יכולה לענות לנו על שאלות, לאתר שגיאות ולבנות תכניות לימודים לפעמים אפילו טוב יותר מאיתנו. היא כלי עזר מעולה וצריך ללכת איתה, לא נגדה.
אבל האם היא תחליף מורים בשר ודם? לדעתי התשובה היא לא. כל עוד שפה קשורה לנפש האנושית, שום מכונה לא תצליח למלא את מקומה.
